History of the house
History of the house
This place used to serve as the water mill of the village of Saon. The river that now circles the property used to flow straight along the stone wall to a large water wheel on the side of the barn. Down in the basement, this operated a mechanism that allowed them to grind flour. From this they could bake loaves of bread in the bakery at the back of the property. Unfortunately, the bakery is now derelict and the inside has given way to some trees/shrubs that have grown through the roof.
In the early 1900s, the water wheel was replaced for a water turbine and an additional section of barn was built on top of it, at the same time as the construction of this house. The oldest part of the barn was built before 1824.
Sustainability: To make the house energy-neutral in the future, the idea is to restore the water turbine and use it to generate electricity. The water flows all year round and we expect to be able to supply the home with enough power due to this!
